Few coworkers at The BoxMaker wear as many hats as Wayne Bates, Production Manager of our Labels, Foam, and Fulfillment divisions. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Wayne to learn more about each of these departments and how they serve our clients every day.
How long have you been with The BoxMaker, and what are the responsibilities of your role?
I have been with The BoxMaker for 9 years and my responsibilities include overseeing production for the Label, Foam, and Fulfillment divisions and maintaining stringent attention to detail and quality to meet the needs of our clients.
Describe a typical day for your team members at The BoxMaker.
All three departments produce products and perform tasks that go “beyond the box” for our clients. In foam, we are custom cutting and assembling a wide variety of protective packaging. Our label department prints custom digital labels on our new Indigo 6800, as well as flexo labels on our Mark Andy 8-color web-fed press. In fulfillment, on any given day this division may be packing custom medical kits, assembling digital POP displays, or folding custom boxes and inserts to reduce customers’ labor needs.
How do your teams’ activities support client objectives?
The label, foam, and fulfillment departments power client projects in addition to their corrugated box or display order. Our foam department takes care of anything foam from custom P.E. endcaps to die-cut P.U. inserts to EPS liners. Our labels team can handle a multitude of label applications whether it be a digital label that has variable data and a challenging color match, or a complex six-color flexo label that may require die-cut hang holes. Fulfillment is where it all comes together - from custom kitting and warehousing to digital display building, this division can take on small or large custom labor projects. Fulfillment is a real value-add for our clients because it allows them to focus on what they do best, and let us do the rest.
What’s one thing you wish more people knew about The BoxMaker?
I think more people should know how connected and committed our owners and directors are with day-to-day operations.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Two things come to mind: interacting with the production teams, and helping clients with special projects.
What types of shifts do you see taking place in the packaging industry within your focuses, and how is The BoxMaker addressing those shifts?
Digital opportunities are becoming more prevalent in the industry and I believe the recent purchase of the Indigo 6800 confirms The BoxMaker’s commitment to stay current and on top of the latest capabilities to best serve our clients as the packaging industry makes a shift towards digital.
Thank you, Wayne, for sharing more about the labels, foam, and fulfillment divisions, and for all of your teams' hard work on behalf of our clients!
