ECORRCRATE: A Money and Environment Saving Alternative to Wooden Crates

February 05, 2015

We all think of wood as a renewable resource, and it is. However, with the rise in forest conservation awareness, it has become apparent that reducing wood waste is a key practice to keeping wood out of landfills.

The most common container for freight needs has historically been wooden crates. But, did you know the most common shipping container could also be the most costly? Wooden crates can have serious ramifications not only on your bank account, but also on the environment.

What’s the problem with wood crates?

Wood crates can increase the weight of whatever you are transporting, contributing to the steady climb in freight costs. In 2014, rates increased as much as 50% during peak times of the year. Wood crates can also require specific equipment for packing, opening, and disposal such as crowbars or special disposal bins that are inconvenient and take up space.

We all think of wood as a renewable resource, and it is. However, with the rise in forest conservation awareness, it has become apparent that reducing wood waste is a key practice to keeping wood out of landfills. Wood waste not only hurts our environment, but also is costly to businesses. In fact, the average cost for sending wood waste to landfills comes out to about $30 to $40 per ton!

Introducing ECORRCRATE

That’s why The BoxMaker supplies ECORRCRATE, an eco-friendly, easy to recycle, durable, and cost effective crating alternative. ECORRCRATE was created in 2009, when a team of corrugated experts gathered together to develop a cost effective and environmentally friendly solution to wood crates.

What makes it so great?

The main benefits are:

  • It weighs in at about half the weight of wood crates, severely saving on freight costs, fuel consumption to ship your product, and ultimately a better transportation method for the environment
  • 100% recyclable
  • Water resistant
  • Requires no specific disposal bins, just your regular ol’ recycle bin!
  • The unique design allows them to store flat in your warehouse, saving valuable space
  • It assembles in minutes, streamlining your production line. No more messing with nails or screws, not to mention severed fingers…
  • Customizable to specific size requirements to ensure proper fit and less waste in your supply chain

What’s it made of?

ECORRCRATE is made up of ECORRBOARD, a durable and waterproof corrugated material that has been found to be equal to the strength of traditional wooden crates. ECORRBOARD is made up of a specific combination of paperboard corrugation, glues, and coatings to form a durable water resistant board that forms the walls, ceiling, and floor to ECORRCRATEs.

We know what you’re thinking: there’s no way that a corrugated crate can hold as much weight as a wood crate. Think again! In compression lab tests done at the International Paper Test Lab in Nashville, TN and Longview Fibre in Longview, Washington, the standard ECORRCRATE tested at over 7,000lbs before failure (deflection of 1.56″).  The HD ECORRCRATE tested at over 12,000lbs.

Who should use it?

Simply put, this product is for anyone who is ships with wooden crates. More specifically, ECORRCRATE is an ideal solution where product needs to be shipped back for returns or quality approvals. Additionally, because they can be easily opened with scissors, they are better crate options for shipping into hospitals, offices, or any other destination where crowbars and drills aren’t standard issue.

If you’re thinking about how to reduce your freight costs, lessen your environmental impact, or what you can do to make your client’s lives a little easier, consider ECORRCRATE. Give us a call if you’d like to learn more and see if ECORRCRATE could be a good option for you!
